New Year Trivia

1. New Year's Day is the world's most observed holiday. In most English-speaking countries, it has been observed on January 1 since the British Calendar Act was passed in 1751. There was a time when people wished others a "Happy New Year" on March 25, approximately the date of spring's onset.

2. In many countries, it is the custom to wish friends a "Happy Birthday" on January 1st, rather than a "Happy New Year." This day is nicknamed "Everyman's Birthday," and is considered the day when everyone becomes a year older, whether it's their actual day of birth or not.

 3. The Beatles auditioned for Decca records, only to be rejected because the company felt "groups of guitars are on the way out."  It turned out to be one of the worst decisions in record company history.

 4. In January 1950, actor John Wayne placed his hand prints in wet cement at Grauman's Chinese Theatre (now Mann's Chinese Theatre) in Hollywood. Sand used in the cement reportedly was brought from Iwo Jima, in tribute to his performance in the 1949 film Sands of Iwo Jima. This event marked the 90th such ceremony in the "Forecourt of the Stars" at the famous theatre.

 5. Mr. Blackwell, the self-proclaimed fashion judge of Hollywood celebrities, put out his 41st "Worst Dressed List" in January 2001 for the year 2000. On singer Britney Spears, he barbed, "Oops, she did it again. Her . . . collection of Madonna rejects are pure fashion overkill.''

6. Strangely enough, comedian Jim Carrey, who portrayed late comedian Andy Kaufman in the film Man on the Moon, and Andy Kaufman were both born on January 17th.

7. The fastest temperature change on record is a rise of 49° F in two minutes, from -4° to 45° F. This occurred in Spearfish, South Dakota, January 1943, between 7:30 and 7:32 a.m.

10. Joe Namath signed a $400,000 contract with the New York Jets of the old American Football League in January 1965, becoming the richest rookie in pro football at the time.  He had also been drafted by a National Football League's St. Louis Cardinals.  The Cardinals left St. Louis for the warm temperatures of Arizona, but have yet to have a winning season there.  In the meantime the Los Angeles Rams left their home of 50 years and took the Cardinal's place in St. Louis, and won the 2000 Super Bowl.
